Our story
Our company was founded in 1861 and is one of the oldest funeral homes in Berlin that is still run as a family business today.
At first we were based in Wassertorstrasse in Kreuzberg, where Friedrich Kluth opened his 'Kluth'sches Trauerinstitut'. In addition to funeral services, the production of coffins made up the largest part of the company's spectrum at that time. His son Otto Kluth followed him in the management of the company, as did his son, who was also called Otto.
During the Second World War, the building in which the store was located was completely destroyed. Otto Kluth and his entire family, who had gathered in the house on that night of the bombing, fell victim to the attack.
When Otto’s brother Heinz Kluth returned from being a prisoner of war in 1948, the business moved with him to Schöneberg’s Maxstrasse, now Kärntener Strasse, across the street from our current store.
Since 1962 we have been located at Hauptstrasse 106 on the corner of Kärntener Strasse. After Heinz Kluth’s death, his wife Lieselotte continued the business here until their son Axel Kluth took it over from her in 1969 and continued until 2007.
At the beginning of 2008, the next generation, Axel Kluth’s son-in-law Dr.-Ing. Fabian Lenzen, took over the family business. Since then, it has been registered in the commercial register. Since 2009, Kluth-Bestattungen has also been a training company.
